Making News

My internship requires me to read the Washington Times newspaper every day. Here are some highlights:

- I've got issues with Europeans: Germans are a breed of their own – they just announced the release of Eos TV, a channel that devotes itself to 24/7 discussion of death, dying and aging. According to the London Sunday Telegraph, the channel “will feature documentaries about graveyards, televised obituaries, tips on finding a decent retirement home and even how to install in-house stair lifts.”
Apparently, in a country where you’re annually seeing 150,000 more deaths than births, aging is kinda the thing to do.

- A silent holocaust: This is sick. India is putting in place a pregnancy registry in an effort to cut down on abortions and infanticide. Presumably because of archaic dowry rules that financially gut a girls’ parents when she gets married, parents are killing their infants en masse. In the past 20 years, the government estimates 10 million babies have been killed.

- Faux Pas: a homeowner’s association in a Denver suburb is looking whether to fine a family $500 for an irksome little gesture – the family flew the American flag upside down in March in protest of the Iraq war. Kinda reminds me of an incident in which our associate pastor flew the church’s flag upside down and set off a small riot among neighbors. Accident? I don’t think so. We suspect he's a commie.
And finally, the photo of the day:
Demure and sweet Laura vs. cold and calculating Hillary, spotted at Lady Bird Johnson's funeral.

did you know that Laura Bush smokes? I heard this from a friend. But, she is still nicer than Hillary in my book.

This would explain why Bush is planning on vetoing a proposed $10-per-cigar tobacco tax.
