At our NYE party, we played Pictionary, and the above is my mom's interpretation of "Gladiator."
DIET Pepsi. The ultimate sign that it's the new year and mom and dad have lots of very good, very doomed intentions.
During the course of the evening, Pier and I took a random trip to the Dreyer's ice cream storage warehouse, which a family friend manages. This is us, barely surviving in the -20 degree freezer. The Drumsticks, however, were sufficient hardship compensation.
This is my dad's interpretation of "American Werewolf in London." It is still unclear whether the beaked, finned skull at the top indicates "werewolf" or "American."
--------------
I'm one of those people who loves New Years, largely because I love making huge, unrealistic goals for myself and this time gives me and excuse to do so.
One of my big resolutions this year is to get more organized and disciplined. If this doesn't happen, I'm confident that taking 18 units along with my Chimes job will somehow force it.
But that silly resolution wasn't what made this New Years Day great. What was exciting about today was hearing God speak. In the middle of reading Dietrich Bonhoeffer's "The Cost of Discipleship," I stumbled across a passage that pointed this out: if your faith isn't accompanied with immediate obedience, you're in love with the abstract concept of Christ and not Christ himself, because when Christ calls, we're compelled to JUST DO IT. Kinda the way that the disciples just dropped their nets and followed Jesus, no questions asked.
Right then, I put down the book and JUST DID IT. "IT" involved reconciling with someone I'd held in contempt, ignored, raged about for months.
And God was faithful with that act of obedience, even though I'd been in sin for months and even though these acts of obedience are embarrassingly few and far between. He was so faithful.
That's all it took to convince me -- I think 2007's going to be a pretty darn good year...
Party Like it's 1999
Sincerely,
Michelle
