So today there's supposed to be some major immigrant protesting in LA. Latinos are boycotting everything from school to shopping as a way to show their city what kind of effect they have on their communities. In other places, they're trying human chains. Places are closing down in downtown for the day as people march.
I'm not sure what I think about immigration reform yet. Deportation is really out of the question. Giving everyone amnesty is unsafe. I'm really confused.
But one thing I can say. For those immigrants here, I hope the protesting isn't an end in itself. I hope it's a vehicle for second chances, and that immigrants will embrace those second chances and those opportunities and become something radically better than the people they could afford to be in their native lands. That's what this country is all about anyway.
