Blessed are the Meek

False Humility: saying you're junk and worthless and insufferably lame and stupid.
Real Humility: saying you're junk at some stuff but for other things you're actually pretty good.
False Humility: saying you're perfect. Or saying, "awww, that was nothing."
Real Humility: Like Paul, saying you've done noble things but unabashedly claiming that thorn in the flesh.

I saw some real humility today. Rick Warren--the guy that wrote The Purpose Driven Life, which is currenly in week 162 of being at the top of the NY Times bestseller list, talked about exactly that at a Biola leadership conference. He didn't try to hide the elephant in the room and bypass that major detail, his stunning fame and fortune, in the name of humility. He put it right on the table and talked flat out about it. In the same way that he flat out put on the table that he's weak because of medical issues and personality issues and spiritual issues.

Wow.

Then he proved it by receiving every person in that line that wanted to talk to him. He gave them each a smile and a hug, and said, "It's great to see you" to people he didn't even know. He didn't shoo off this goofy little reporter either. He gave me the time of day and looked me in the eye and took a picture with me and answered my questions with enthusiasm.

Yes, I saw humility today.

I saw the real thing.
